US COVID cases fall, but deaths continue to rise with omicron surge

There are signs that parts of the United States are emerging from the worst of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. Positive cases continue to fall, as do hospitalisations. But while COVID-19 infections are going down, the death toll is going in the opposite direction. 2,500 people a day in the US are dying from omicron variant of the coronavirus — much higher than most other developed countries.
