US COVID-19: More than 145,000 hospitalised in Omicron surge
US President Joe Biden has defended his administration's response to a surge in Omicron cases. More people are now in hospital with COVID-19 than ever before and infections are hitting an average of 750,000 a day. A US Senate committee has questioned federal officials on how they have been handling the pandemic. The strain on the healthcare system has been compounded by staff shortages, as hospital workers become infected.
