US COVID-19 cases surge: Officials warn Omicron variant spreading

Cases in the United States are again rising rapidly as the Omicron strain of the coronavirus spreads, threatening to overwhelm hospitals already struggling with the Delta variant. Medical experts have warned those not yet inoculated should get the jab as Omicron could replace Delta as the dominant mutation in weeks. But the White House said it did not advise new lockdowns as vaccines offered protection against COVID-19. On Wednesday cases in the US soared past the 800,000 mark – the highest national death toll since the pandemic began.
