Ukraine-Russia crisis: Western governments put their forces on alert as tension rise
The crisis between Russia and Ukraine has prompted one of the biggest mobilisations of Western forces in Europe in generations, but it is a delicate balancing act. The West fears Moscow is preparing a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while the Kremlin says it is countering decades of NATO expansion eastwards. Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula caught allied Western forces off guard. With European security once again at stake, the NATO alliance wants its presence firmly felt.
