Through war and decay, Libya’s ‘desert pearl’ tries to hold on

In the heart of the Libyan Sahara is a city known as the ‘pearl of the desert’ – built up around an oasis that has been a refuge for thousands of years. The Ghadames old city is a UNESCO world heritage site, but is now on the endangered list. Years of neglect and a lack of government funding are threatening the survival of one of the world's oldest cities.
