Pope to visit Canada amid fury about Indigenous school abuse

Pope Francis has agreed to visit Canada amid calls to apologise for the Catholic Church's role in abusing Indigenous children between the late 1800s and 1990s. Earlier this year, more than 200 unmarked graves of children were found at the church-run Kamloops Indian Residential School in western Canada. Thousands of more graves were subsequently discovered in other communities. The Canadian government-initiated Truth and Reconciliation Commission says the children were subject to physical, mental and sexual abuse. Although a date has not yet been set, the pope's visit will be part of a reconciliation process between the Vatican and Indigenous peoples.
