It has taken 16 years in office for Angela Merkel to mention much about her East German roots. But the outgoing chancellor has now criticised negative remarks about her upbringing in the former socialist German Democratic Republic. On October 3, Marking the 31st anniversary of reunification, Merkel urged citizens to overcome the East-West divide and forge a common future. Biographers say her roots played a crucial role in her leadership.
