Les Wanyika: Kenya’s rhumba hitmakers return after 24 years

One of Kenya’s most prolific rhumba bands, Les Wanyika is back together to perform its hits, once again after more than twenty years. From the 1970s to the 1990s, Les Wanyika were one of Kenya’s most-loved rumba bands. Some of the original band members have passed away. The rest are now back together. African rumba music began in Democratic Republic of Congo nearly a century ago, influenced by music from Cuba. But in the 70s Nairobi became a hub for bands fleeing censorship and seeking a market – and so the scene boomed in East Africa too. Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb reports from Nairobi, Kenya.
