Kashmir Jamia Masjid remains closed for Friday prayers

In Indian-administered Kashmir, a centuries-old mosque remains out of bounds for Friday prayers. The mosque was closed in 2019 when the government revoked the region’s autonomy. In the heart of the main city Srinagar, the mosque is a major meeting point for people who live there. Sermons would address Kashmir’s political struggles. Authorities have long seen it as a place of anti-government activities. The government has also blamed the pandemic – and says it will ask local authorities for a security review to reopen the mosque. But Kashmiris are sceptical and say New Delhi has made similar excuses in the past to crack down on their freedoms.
