Israel to stop at nothing to target Hamas commanders

Akiva Eldar, a political analyst and contributer to the Israeli publication Haaretz. says that Israel will stop at nothing to target Hamas commanders. “Unfortunately if you look at the number of fatalities, the homeless people and the destruction of Gaza in proportion to this – another 70, less 70 people dead – in the eyes of the Israeli government and the Israeli public opinion, it’s worse – the death of someone as senior as Mohammed Deif,” he told Al Jazeera. “This will allow [Netanyahu] to declare absolute victory,” he said. Paradoxically, the perceived victory may be Israel’s exit strategy from the war, he added. “The war against Hamas has come to its climax,” the analyst said. “Israel is looking for a way out before Netanyahu gets to Washington and to the [US] Congress. He has to be able to declare some victory and maybe Mohammed Deif was on the hit list and it coincided with his timeline.” There is also a consensus among Israel’s military leadership that Israel has a commitment to get out the captives still held in Gaza, which also include US citizens, Eldar said.
