Former Israeli negotiator says Netanyahu obstructing ceasefire deal

Former Israeli negotiator Gershon Baskin told Al Jazeera that while a quick deal with Hamas to end the war is possible, Prime Minister Netanyahu is obstructing it by insisting on Israeli control of the Philadelphi Corridor, which Baskin called a “ploy.” He stated that military personnel in Israel agree the war could end in three weeks, with Hamas willing to release all Israeli hostages if the conflict ends by then, in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners. Baskin noted that while most Israelis would support such a deal, the society is divided, with some fearing it could lead to another October 7. He also downplayed the impact of US Justice Department charges against Hamas leaders, describing them as mainly for show, but acknowledged that anticipated arrest warrants from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for leaders of both Hamas and Israel could have more significant implications.
