Extract from a conversation with an 18-year-old Afghan who recently joined the Taliban



Shortly after the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan, Euronews’ Anelise Borges travelled to Kabul to report on what the group’s takeover would mean for the country and its people. Over the course of two weeks, Anelise met Afghans from all walks of life to ask them what they expected from the country’s new rulers.
One evening, she came across a young Talib* who spoke fluent English and was eager to explain why he had joined the group – four days earlier. *Talib is the Arabic word for ‘student’ and is widely used in Afghanistan to describe a Taliban member.
