Election runoff an image of a polarised France, analysts say
It was an outcome predicted by many, and a repeat of the same vote five years ago. Incumbent President Emmanuel Macron and far-right leader Marine Le Pen on Sunday came out on top in the first round of the French presidential election, securing their places in the runoff that will be held in two weeks. This time, Macron gained 27.6 percent of the vote, compared with 24 percent in the 2017 first round, and Le Pen slightly improved on her previous gain to claim 23.4 percent of the vote. The two remaining candidates in France's Presidential race, hit the campaign trail, just a day after the first round of voting.
