Argentina’s Peronists lose control of Congress for first time in 40 years

Argentina's governing Peronist party has suffered a severe setback in midterm elections. It lost its majority in Congress for the first time in 40 years. On the ballot were half the members of the lower chamber and a third of the Senate. The government has been losing popularity because of an economic crisis made worse by the pandemic. The election results strengthened the conservative opposition party of former President Mauricio Macri, who left office two years ago. Buenos Aires Mayor Horacio Rodriguez Larreta said the election is crucial to take power away from the governing party.
