Tigrayan fighters capture thousands of government soldiers

The Presidents of Kenya and South Africa have called for a ceasefire in Ethiopia. It comes as footage has emerged of thousands of federal troops being held as prisoners of war by Tigrayan fighters. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, a former soldier, has called on the country’s citizens to take up arms and join him on the battlefield against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. The United States has warned that the war in Africa’s second-most populous country could fracture and destabilise the rest of the region. A US official has said that a “small window” exists for mediation efforts to work.
