A year of Russia’s war in Ukraine and global energy crisis

Volatile prices, supply shortages and economic uncertainty – the conflict in Ukraine has fuelled what the International Energy Agency calls “the first truly global energy crisis, with impacts that will be felt for years to come”. Outside Ukraine, the war has piled misery on millions of people suffering from acute food and energy crises. Ukraine and Russia are traditionally global exporters of food and the conflict has heavily disrupted supply chains. Russia is also an exporter of energy – namely oil and gas – and has slashed supplies to the West in response to waves of sanctions, fuelling inflation and deepening cost-of-living crises in Europe, in particular. Al Jazeera explores how the war is affecting the global energy markets.
