France and Germany urge Italy to help people stranded on NGO ships
Italy says it will allow the docking of one of three ships currently carrying refugees rescued from the Mediterranean. However, Italy will only carry out health checks. Anyone not allowed to disembark will be told to stay on board and to leave Italian waters. France and Germany are asking Italy’s new far-right-led government to grant a safe port to nearly 1,000 people. Some have been stuck at sea for more than two weeks.
