S Korea: Opposition grows against nuclear power plant expansion

With a growing economy and rising global energy costs, South Korea is eyeing an expansion of its nuclear power capacity. But the government is facing opposition from residents and activists, who say it should focus on renewables instead. South Korea currently has 24 reactors, but there are plans for six more plants by 2036. According to the government, the worldwide energy crisis, made worse by the war in Ukraine, should highlight the need for more domestic power generation, especially in a growing industrial giant that is hungry for electricity.
