UK Conservative candidates throw hats in ring to replace Johnson

Some 11 members of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party have launched bids to replace Boris Johnson as the party’s leader with many pledging lower taxes and a clean start after Johnson’s scandal-ridden premiership. Johnson announced on Thursday that he would step down after dozens of ministers and officials resigned over his handling of a series of scandals, including breaches of lockdown rules in gatherings at his Downing Street office. Johnson said he would lead a caretaker government until the party had chosen a new leader. The Conservative Party’s 1922 Committee of legislators, which sets rules for the party in parliament, will set out the exact timetable for the contest after a meeting on Monday.
