UN chief urges independent probe of civilian deaths in Ukraine’s Bucha

A warning, this report contains images that viewers may find disturbing. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said he was “deeply shocked” by images of dead civilians in the Ukrainian town of Bucha, and called for an independent investigation that “leads to effective accountability”. Guterres posted his comments on Twitter a day after witnesses and officials said that Russian troops killed hundreds of civilians as they withdrew from the town near Kyiv. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described the images of corpses in Bucha as a "punch to the gut" and the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, said “the murder of civilians is a war crime. We must relentlessly investigate these crimes committed by the Russian armed forces”. Ukraine's president, Volodomyr Zelensky, accused Russia of committing genocide.
