Qatar’s first legislative polls: What to expect from Shura vote

Qatar is preparing to hold its first legislative elections. On Saturday, voters will choose 30 members of the 45-member Shura Council. The body dates back to 1972, but until now was fully appointed by Qatar's emir. The council can propose laws, approve budgets and recall ministers – though the emir will retain veto power.
