Australian government shelves religious freedom amendments



Religious groups in Australia have expressed regret over the shelving of proposed legislation that protects minority faiths. The bill aimed to ban discrimination based on a person’s religious beliefs. It was amended to include laws preventing religious schools discriminating against students on the grounds of their gender and sexuality. That caused division in federal parliament, and the bill was shelved.
