Zimbabwe teachers strike as unions reject gov’t pay offer

Zimbabwe’s government suspended thousands of teachers for three months without pay – for going on strike and demanding more money. Striking teachers say rising inflation is eating away at their salaries and they want to be paid in US dollars. The government has offered teachers a 20 percent pay increase, with part-payment of salaries in US dollars and incentives including free education for their children and housing loans. Unions, however, rejected the offer – saying it is still not enough. The education department says the striking educators can be replaced with thousands of unemployed teachers currently looking for work. But union leaders believe politicians are out of touch.
