Ecuador top court upholds Indigenous rights against mining, oil projects
Ecuador’s highest court has ruled that Indigenous communities must have more say over oil and mining projects that impact their land. The unpreceded ruling obliges the government to consult communities over projects and to seek their consent. The ruling is a blow to the government’s ambitious plans to double oil production and expand mining – most of which take place in the Amazon rainforest.
