30 new released Palestinian prisoners arrival in Ramallah celebrated by people waving Hamas flags
Thirty Palestinian prisoners were released by Israel and arrived in the West Bank, coinciding with the fifth day of a temporary ceasefire with Hamas. They were welcomed by people waving Fatah and Hamas flags in Ramallah.
On the same day, Hamas released 12 hostages held since October 7. These releases are part of efforts to extend the ongoing ceasefire, with mediators in Qatar working towards this goal. The truce between Israel and Hamas remained intact for a fifth day, amidst negotiations for its extension. The U.S. has pressured Israel to ensure better protection of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. The latest prisoner exchange saw 10 Israeli citizens and two foreigners freed by Hamas and entering Egypt. Israel has proposed to extend the ceasefire in exchange for the release of more hostages by Hamas. However, Hamas may demand more for releasing captive soldiers. Israel aims to end Hamas' 16-year rule in Gaza and weaken its military strength, potentially expanding its ground offensive.
