Almost 2 tons of Ivory destroyed by French Government to symbolize it “only has value on elephants”
The French Government and local NGO IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) destroyed nearly two tons of ivory in Reims, France. This included elephant tusks, jewelry, statuettes, and a mahjong game, amounting to 1.850 tons, equivalent to the tusks of about 180 elephants. The majority of the ivory came from donations by around 90 private individuals, with the rest from police seizures. This initiative, also organized by France's Office for Bio-diversity (OFB), represents the largest destruction of ivory by IFAW France. It aimed to symbolize that "ivory only has value on elephants," amidst declining elephant populations due to hunting and poaching. Some pieces were artistically significant, but the goal was to remove illegal ivory from the market. The ivory was crushed by quarry operator Moroni and incinerated by Veolia. France's "Je donne mon ivoire" campaign reflects strict ivory trade restrictions globally, but illegal trade persists online. Environmental crime, including ivory trafficking, generates significant revenue, often funding terrorist groups in Africa, and is one of the most lucrative illegal activities worldwide, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
