Bus accident: falls into an abyss in the Peruvian Andes after going off the road, killing 20 people
A bus in the Peruvian Andes skidded off the road and plunged down a slope, resulting in the death of at least 20 people. The incident, involving a bus from "La Perla del Altomayo," occurred in the district of Cusca, Corongo province. Local residents tried to reach the bus, which had fallen about 300 meters. The Mayor of Yanac, near Cusca, reported the road's poor condition, including numerous potholes. The cause of the accident is under investigation. In Peru, road accidents are often attributed to reckless driving and speeding. Road transport surveillance is inadequate, and emergency response is often slow and disorganized, leading to additional fatalities. Most victims of road accidents are low-income individuals, and despite the need for comprehensive transport reform recognized for nearly two decades, no government has initiated it. In 2022, traffic accidents in Peru resulted in approximately 3,311 deaths, as reported by the Peruvian Ombudsman's Office.
