Former UNRWA official says Gaza turning into ‘world’s largest open-air death camp’
Chris Gunness, the former spokesman for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, told Al Jazeera that “Gaza is staring into an abyss” as aid deliveries remain woefully inadequate and fuel is still blocked from entering the enclave. “Gaza is being transformed as we speak from what a former British Prime Minister once called the world’s largest open-air prison into the world’s largest open-air death camp,” he told Al Jazeera. “Fuel, which is what will keep the water plant pumping station open, has run out. So water, the basic element for life is really not available to 2.2 million people,” Gunness said. “As a matter of direct political choice, the Israeli Defence Minister made it very clear that the blockade of Gaza would be absolute. “We know that about 150 trucks have been let in since the 21st of October. It is not enough. And what we’re seeing now is not just a catastrophe, but a catastrophe of choice,” he said. Gunness echoed UN humanitarian office OCHA, adding that the Karem Abu Salem crossing (called Kerem Shalom by Israel) between Israel and Gaza, located near the border with Egypt, would allow a much larger of number of trucks to pass through compared with the single-lane, Rafah crossing into Egypt.
